Phoenix Ehrlich 5/85- 12/99
Phoenix with Rachel Sauls at FACC
Phoenix was 15 years old went she left us, and we still miss that feisty Southern
shorthaired cat who definitely had a mind of her own.  While we were living in
Charleston, South Carolina, we found Phoenix in a plastic trash bag along with her two
sisters. The bag had been tossed into a pile of rubble - all that was left of our
next-door neighbors' garage following a frightening house fire just three weeks before.
In the bag were three tiny (4 week-old) kittens, a black, white and gray. After they were
checked out by our Veterinarian, we kept the black and white females, the gray went with
our neighbors across the street.  Phoenix got her name from the mythical bird that
was said to rise from ashes and her little white sister was named Toyota,
in honor of the brand new white Toyota Camry which was lost in the garage fire!
The gray kitten, now at home across the street, was known as Bertha (don't ask).
Phoenix and Toyota became instant members of our "Rug Rats"  gang - a rowdy band-of-brothers
made up of our two sons, ages 3 1/2 years and 18 months, and our Sheltie pup
(who thought the kittens were HIS toys) was only 8 months at the time - thus our home
became a virtual circus!!  From the very start Phoenix became the leader,
ALL followed her, she was the first to spot all spiders, catch any mice in the garage and
could outrun the kids AND the Sheltie to the dinner table - hands down!
With us she weathered 7 moves, the loss of her pal Strider the Sheltie, the addition of
two more Shelties (and she trained them too) and eventually the loss of her sister Toyota,
who passed away 14 months before her.  She battled old age in the very same way she tore up
every catnip mouse she found - with cat-like grace and tenacity, but finally decided to check out
the mouse-supply in heaven the day after Christmas, 2000.
Phoenix was just too much fun to ever forget.
